Economic issues have gained importance in the healthcare sector during the last decades. Since 1994 the Federal Law on Health Insurance includes the concepts of effectiveness, appropriateness and cost effectiveness as a prerequisite for the cost coverage of services by compulsory health insurance. Nurses in senior positions are hence increasingly challenged to assume responsibility not only regarding service effectiveness and quality but also about the efficiency of care delivery.
