Why do we need gerontological care science?

Increasing life expectancy with an often long healthy phase is a welcome development, as it allows an active life in the third stage of life. However, health risks and problems increase in old age and professional care is often required to meet the specific physical, social, mental, emotional, cultural and spiritual needs of older people and ensure the best possible quality of life. Professional care is based on the ethical principles of justice, care and autonomy and guarantees as much self-determination as possible until death.
