Nursing Science

Nursing science is an interdisciplinary discipline that deals with the research and development of nursing practices, theories and systems. Its aim is to improve the quality of care and find evidence-based solutions to the challenges facing the healthcare system. It combines findings from the fields of medicine, psychology, sociology and ethics to promote a comprehensive understanding of nursing processes and their impact on patients.

In Switzerland, nursing science has established itself as a dynamic and future-oriented discipline. In 2025, the first Institute of Nursing Science at the University of Basel will be celebrating its 25th anniversary, while the Institut Universitaire de Formation et de Recherche en Soins (IUFRS) in French-speaking Switzerland will be celebrating its 15th anniversary in 2024. Seven universities in German-speaking Switzerland, French-speaking Switzerland and Ticino currently offer a total of eight degree programs.

As the VFP, we are proud to actively support this progress. Since our foundation in 1996, we have achieved significant milestones together with our members and are optimistic about the future of nursing science.

We provide an insight into the diverse fields of work for nursing scientists in Switzerland.
